• With the start of the New Climate Regime in 2021, several countries have declared carbon neutrality by 2050. This raised the necessity for low-carbon strategies in social structures such as energy production and usage.
• The worldwide efforts to achieve carbon neutrality cause pressure for reducing GHG in the short term, but in the longer term, this will be an opportunity to expand markets for competitive technologies.
• In South Korea, the solar photovoltaic (PV) technology standard is the highest among renewable energy technologies. However, the technological gap between China is not wide, and Korea’s wind and hydrogen/fuel-cell technology levels are behind those in other advanced countries.
• South Korea's secondary battery and green car technology levels are of the highest levels in its green industry, and the secondary battery technology level specifically has largely increased since 2014.
• South Korea’s carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology level recently stagnated, recording the lowest in comparison to other countries.
• Korea is leading the secondary battery and green car technologies and Korean companies are top-ranking in such markets. None, however, can be found in the wind power facility market.
• Carbon neutrality requires technological innovation not only in the energy supply and transport systems but also in the overall economic structure such as manufacturing process and the energy consumption structure; thus, Korea should use this as an opportunity to expand market share through higher technological competitiveness.
