In 2026, supported by strong semiconductor-led exports and a recovery in domestic demand, the Korean economy is gradually emerging from the weakness experienced in the previous year, when growth slowed amid heightened domestic and external uncertainty and sluggish domestic demand. Nevertheless, uncertainty surrounding the current economic environment remains elevated, partly reflecting the conflict in the Middle East. Sustained policy efforts are also needed to address the major structural challenges facing the Korean economy, including demographic change, the prospect of persistently low growth, and the need to respond to the climate crisis.
Against the backdrop of rapidly changing domestic and external conditions, this report aims to provide a comprehensive assessment of the Korean economy, present objective economic information, and contribute to informed policy discussions.
This report consists of three parts and eleven chapters. Part I describes the structure and components of the national economy and examines economic cycles and growth from the perspectives of production, income distribution, and expenditure. Part II reviews major economic indicators, including economic growth, prices, and employment, to provide a multifaceted assessment of current economic conditions. Part III reviews major policies in the areas of production, income distribution, finance, and monetary policy and reviews their current status and key challenges. In particular, the report incorporates recent economic trends and policy issues, including artificial intelligence, energy and the environment, and policy finance, into its sector-specific policy discussions, thereby reflecting recent changes in the economic and policy environment and further enhancing its policy relevance and timeliness.
